For Autumn 25, we invite you into our orchard, where honeyed light spills through  leaves onto branches laden with fruit. Natural apple and pear extracts shade into richer tones with cognac and blue chamomile - tempered with sweet neroli for a whisper of springtime blossoms. 

Set into the lid of your candle is a seasonal artwork, inspired by the tree of life  mythology that recurs across cultures. Here in Britain, many of us recognise it  from the story of Adam and Eve, and Eden’s fruits - but long before this the  Celts cultivated a sacred tree at the heart of their settlements, a place of  connection with the Otherworld.  

Our proprietary wax blend is plant-based, poured in the UK, and fragranced with  100% natural oils. The vessel is made from electric-forged recycled stainless  steel. A unique edition number is carved into the underside of the lid.

This season’s candle echoes the spirit of its Eau de Parfum counterpart, but has been carefully adapted for the home. Set into the lid is a limited edition enamel artwork by Cory Feder, inspired by the tree of life mythology that recurs across cultures.

Closely related to cardamom and turmeric, our ginger root comes from Kaduna, northern Nigeria, where it is extracted using the CO2 process. This unassuming, knobbled root is packed with an earthy, hot aroma and has long been prized in traditional medicines, particularly as an aid for digestion.

Pink pepper is not, in fact, a member of the pepper family, but pink peppercorns do resemble the real thing in flavour and appearance - hence the name. We extract Ffern pink peppercorn from plants grown on Réunion Island, using the supercritical CO2 extraction process.

The La Faces are a third-generation citrus farming family, and the go-to source for citrus expertise at Ffern. They grow lemons on the northeastern tip of Sicily - just across the 3km straight of Messina and in sight of our Bergamot on the Calabrian shores. The fruit is picked by hand, and the rinds cold pressed on site.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint, a familiar sparkly note with, as you’d expect, a slight peppery edge. This ingredient brings a distinctive ‘cold’ facet to fragrances, similar to eucalyptus. We partner with farmers in India's northerly 'Mint Regions' to grow and steam distill our high grade peppermint oil.

The cognac oil we have sourced is a byproduct of winemaking in Romania - a land with its own distinctive climate and soil, which gives the cognac oil a certain character. The oil itself is obtained by distillation during the fermentation of the grape juice.⁠ As a base note, it is dry, green and slightly fruity.

Ffern petitgrain is harvested in Paraguay from a hybrid tree - a cross between a sweet _Citrus x sinensis_ and a bitter _Citrus x aurantium_. Grown by a network of family farmers in the South, the tree’s leaves and branches are cut and immediately distilled in hand built, clay sealed wooden distilleries - it’s imperative to keep the time between harvest and distillation to a minimum to preserve the freshness of the scent, which is woody and green with a floral edge.

We harvest our ylang ylang, the 'flower of flowers', on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar, once nicknamed the ‘scented island’. Its warm and humid climate allows the flower to thrive, and you will smell the flower long before you see the tree. 

The distillation of our ylang ylang oil is a time-sensitive and complex process. The aromatic blooms, with their signature drooping yellow petals, are typically harvested early in the morning when the flowers are at their most fragrant. Local harvesters work with great care to avoid damaging the delicate petals, which could compromise the quality of the oil extracted. After picking, the flowers are immediately taken to small, family-owned distilleries, where the steam distillation process begins within hours to preserve the scent’s freshness.

Distilled from the leaves and branches of the camphor tree (_Cinnamomum camphora_), ho wood oil is a light, very pleasant woody note with floral and citrus facets. Its scent profile is similar to coriander seed and rosewood. Rosewood sadly being endangered, ho wood is often used as a sustainable alternative in perfumery. The oil promotes tranquillity and relaxation, and pairs well with basil, cedarwood, geranium, lavender, sandalwood and clary sage.

Our neroli oil is extracted from the blossom of bitter Seville Orange trees on Cape Bon in northern Tunisia - a peninsula that juts out into the Tyrrhenian sea, across from Sicily. The blossoms are hand-picked in the Spring at daybreak, once dew has formed. The flowers are immediately pressed and distilled - every second they sit in the morning sun detracts from the characteristically fresh scent that wooed Anne Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola, and won the oil its name.

Known also as royal jasmine, jasmine grandiflorum is one of the most sought after ingredients in fine perfumery. To make a kilogram of the absolute takes eight million flowers - these delicate, night-flowering blooms are hand-picked at dawn between June and September in the Indian Himalayas, where the flowers are sacred. The first harvest is offered to the gods; the second is plaited into hair and used to decorate the home; only the third may be used to make the absolute used in fragrance. To avoid any damage to this culture, and to reduce air miles, we at Ffern get our jasmine grandiflorum from India. Ffern nose Elodie Durande notes its mild, fruity sweetness, likening it to apricot jam.

Grown on Calabrian hills overlooking the Ionian Sea, the fruit is harvested by hand and the oil extracted at source. The La Face family planted their first bergamot in the 1930’s and have been mastering the craft of producing citrus oils ever since. They are always our first port of call when it comes to sourcing bergamot and other citruses for our fragrances.

Also known as musk mallow, ambrette seed oil is a wonderful plant-based alternative to musk. Added to this, it has a persistent scent that makes it an excellent fixative in fine fragrances, making the scent last longer. The aromatic ambrette plant is native to India; it has pale yellow, hibiscus-like flowers with purple centres. Its hairy seed pods, containing several kidney bean-shaped seeds, are dried before undergoing steam distillation to produce the essential oil we use in our fragrances. 
We work with ambrette seed growers in San Martín, Peru, a region dominated by forest ecosystems rich in biodiversity and agroforestry.

Our red cedar wood (also known as red juniper) is grown and harvested in its native Virginia, USA, and principally used for cabinet making. The oil is steam distilled directly from a cabinet maker’s offcuts. It shares the classic woody notes of atlas cedar, but introduces a distinctive ‘pencil’ facet.

Our rock rose grows wild on the plains of Almaden de la Plata outside Seville, Spain. In late summer, the leafy stems of the plant are sickle harvested and plunged into hot carbonated water. This mixture is then distilled to obtain a honeyed, amber resin - labdanum. The plant remains are used as biofuel. Traditionally, labdanum was taken from the coats of goats who grazed the rock rose-covered hillsides of Crete - but times have changed.

Benzoin Siam is a balsamic resin taken from the bark of the styrax tree. The trees grow wild in the Annamite mountains, Laos. In September, a v-shaped cut is made in the tree bark, and brittle white ‘tears’ of benzoin resin accumulate over a three-week period. This process is known as ‘tapping’.

Oakmoss, despite its name, is not a moss but a branching lichen, varying in colour from very pale to dark olives and ambers when wet. It can be found in temperate, mountainous forests throughout the northern hemisphere, growing on the branches and trunks of deciduous trees and conifers, but most especially on the oak. Its presence is a sign of unpolluted air. Our oakmoss is foraged from the trunks and branches of wild growing oak trees in the hills of Samokov, Macedonia, and transported to Grasse, where the oil is extracted by a family-run distillery.

Olibanum (also known as frankincense) is a resin taken from the bark of the Boswellia tree. At Ffern we use _Boswellia carterii_ - a species native to Somalia. The trees grow wild along the Gulf of Aden in northern Somalia, and the resin ‘tears’ are harvested by local collectors over a period of weeks.⁠ By limiting the harvesting to a few weeks of the year, the trees are able to recover and regrow - making it a sustainable and manageable practice.⁠

Olibanum has been traded in the Middle East and North Africa for some 5,000 years. It is believed that the Babylonians and Assyrians favoured oliburnam for its sweet, woody scent and would burn it during religious ceremonies.⁠

Crab apples belong to the genus Malus, just like domestic apples (Malus domestica), but are distinguished by their small fruits and epic blossom displays. Our variety of crab apple is the European Malus sylvestris, also known as the ‘wild forest apple’, which has grown across the continent since the Neolithic period and found its way into many mythologies - notably crab apples are the ‘silver boughs’ of Irish legend, which may open a path to Tír Na nÓg, the Otherworld.

Our natural crap apple extract is made using the CO2 extraction process, using skins and pulp left over from traditional cider making. A sustainable by-product transformed into a perfume ingredient, it captures the character of the wild apple tree - bright, tart and a little floral.

Extracting essential oil from pears is nearly impossible - pears are composed mostly of water, and simply don’t yield oil through traditional methods like steam distillation or cold pressing. As a result, perfumers typically rely on synthetic compounds to recreate the fruit’s scent. 

Ffern’s nose, Elodie, took a different approach. She turned to a naturally derived molecule that captures the essence of pear. Through the fermentation of sugarcane, this ester is formed in a process that is entirely natural and chemically identical to the molecule found in pear fruit. The result is a scent that is true to pear - sweet, green and fruity.

Our chamomile comes from the rich soils of Egypt’s Nile Valley, where Matricaria recutita - also known as wild or blue chamomile - has been grown for centuries. Though the flower itself is white and gold, once it has undergone steam distillation the resulting oil is blue. 

This unusual colour comes from chamazulene, an aromatic compound released during steam distillation. Its scent is warm and herbaceous, reminiscent of hay, with apple-like notes and earthy undertones. Hence the name of the plant, chamomile, reflects this observation by the Ancient Greeks: χαμαί ("on the ground") and μήλον ("apple").

Nicknamed the Ivory Flower for its creamy-white petals and decadent connotations, tuberose is one of the most captivating ingredients in fine perfumery. Its blossoms are so powerful that just a few stems can perfume a room for days, or even weeks. This intensity stems from its nocturnal nature. Tuberose blooms at night, when the flower’s colours are invisible to insects - so it must seduce pollinators through scent alone.

The extraction of tuberose absolute has evolved significantly over the centuries. Historically, perfumers employed the cold enfleurage technique - a process that preserves the flower’s scent well, but is time consuming and labour intensive. At Ffern, we employ a solvent extraction method, yielding a much higher concentration of fragrance. The result is an absolute whose scent is green, floral, creamy and honeyed, with facets of beeswax and gingerbread.

For Autumn 25, we invite you into our orchard. Here, honeyed light spills through leaves onto branches laden with apples and pears, sweetened by the warmth of the westering sun.

Hidden within each fruit are seeds, carrying the stories of new trees and blossoms and fruits - a small orchard’s worth inside each ripening globe.

Our own story begins with the apple. For this, we turned to crab apple, the ‘silver boughs’ of Irish mythology.* Our natural apple extract is made using the CO2 extraction process, from skins and pulp left over from cider making. 

For pear, textured and aromatic, we searched far and wide for a natural way of producing its particular scent. We found it, of all places, in sugarcane - which can be fermented to isolate the ingredient that lends that floral, subtle note to pears. 

Blended, our apple and pear called for a little more richness. So we strengthened the fruity-floral notes with blue chamomile, a striking indigo oil with a tang of apples running through. Cognac oil, derived from grapes, added the echo of windfalls. 

Though we find our orchard in autumn, where the fruits are sweet and ripe, the land seems to whisper of seasons past - you can’t have an apple without blossom, nor blossom without buds, nor buds without a season of rest. 

So we brought in blossom, the memory of spring. Creamy jasmine grandiflorum and neroli captured a nectar-sweet, green element - but to add depth we turned to night-flowering tuberose, a new ingredient for us. This lily-like scent lent the fragrance an unexpected dimension, a little hint of dessert - crème brûlée, or buttery apple crumble.
