Myrrh is a bitter-tasting gum taken from the small thorn tree Commiphora myrrha. These flowering trees can be found amid dry, rocky hills - at Ffern we harvest our myrrh in the highlands of Somaliland, northern Somalia. A highly valued perfume in the ancient world, myrrh of course features in the Christian Nativity as a gift of the Magi - but now it is of little value, used rarely for its fragrance and more often for its slight antiseptic and astringent qualities. Yet it has a lovely warm feel, bringing a spicy, balsamic note to the heart of a fragrance.
