Summer 23

Summer 23 layers a squeeze of citrus and a blush of florals with a hot, dry sprinkle of spices and amber. But the key note is osmanthus - a juicy, stone fruit scent evocative of the final days of summer, their twilit hours and peach-coloured skies.

Fragrance Story #

There is a tree much-prized in China. It grows in almost every garden, and in the eighth month of the year it blooms - in time for the Harvest Festival and its bright full moon. This tree has slender branching limbs and pointed leaves like its cousin, the olive. Among them nestle tiny yellow flowers, the size of a grain of rice. In Chinese mythology it is self-healing, a magical tree that grows on the moon. If you chop it down, it grows again.

For many Chinese people, osmanthus is the most evocative scent in the world - much more than the sum of its parts. This heady fragrance calls to mind the sweet, animalic note of apricots, the syrupy freshness of peach, a delicate hint of tea - opening up into the smooth creamy comfort of milk, with even a dash of violet. But osmanthus also summons memories of a time of year, its stories and gatherings.

Though in China osmanthus blossom comes in autumn, for us its stone fruit, tea-like scent is evocative of late summer in Europe. We used it for the first time in Winter 23 as a gentle accent. But for Summer 23 we wanted to celebrate its full-bodied beauty, that slightly musky scent that comes with the early harvest.

We have perfected the base for our Summer fragrances over several years - a squeeze of citrus, a blush of florals and a hot, dry sprinkle of spices and amber.

For this year, Summer 23, we played with this formula to create a fragrance that evokes the ache of the end of the season - the final days of summer, their twilit hours, their peach-coloured skies.

Hello,  Just to say how much I am enjoying my first Ffern experience, Summer 23.  Everything from the packaging, to the teabags but especially the scent.  Beautiful.

Oh my gosh, I love this fragrance, my first from you, SO MUCH! It was hard to stray from my typical Jo Malone repritoire, but this lovely new fragrance is exactly the new, different profile I was looking for. No one will smell like me. 😄I'm so thrilled.

I’ve tried a lot of perfumes over the years, but Ffern has by far been my favourite one. Their Summer ‘23 scent was amazing. 12/10! I’ve had so many people compliment me and ask where I got it. Highly recommend it!

A lovely & unique concept - I love everything about Ffern. The Summer 2023 perfume is delightful and the little touches like a summer tea blend and a perfume disc makes receiving the seasonal box a joy. The podcasts are best enjoyed in a peaceful setting with a cup of the summer tea - in a China cup of course.

Simply Stunning ~ Summer in a fragrance. From the minute my Ffern bottle arrived to spritzing, I was captivated by the attention detail and summer nostalgia fragrances. So impressed with Ffern, something very unique and special about this wonderful creative business!! Can’t wait to receive my winter one.

First scent and I'm hooked. My first scent with Ffern was Summer 23 and I adored it, a little spicier than I expected but it was still such a nice scent, the matching tea was an extraordinary surprise!

The perfect summer fragrance. Not heavy, but not too light that it disappears during the day. Subtle, clean notes of citrus are beautifully combined with other elements to make my favourite summer fragrance EVER. This scent is amazingly addictive!

Ink on paper
2023-03-10
Cici Lee was born in China but now lives in South Carolina, USA. She was inspired, while on a walk in the countryside of the American South where she now lives, to preserve the beauty of nature - but didn't quite know how. An article about Chinese traditional painting then caught her eye, and she immediately began looking for a teacher. Almost ten years on, her work has been exhibited in major exhibitions in Xiamen and Beijing and she enjoys a global Instagram following. In Chinese ink paintings, tradition attaches significance to particular flora and fauna, which when painted together should harmonise. Cici chose to depict the Red-billed Leiothrix bird alongside the osmanthus, as both represent loyalty and faithfulness. The first two characters 癸卯 (gui mao) of the calligraphy indicate the lunar year 2023. The third 夏 (xia) and fourth 月 (yue) represent the summer season. The fifth 希希 (Xixi, the repetition indicated in the calligraphy by two dots), is the artist’s name in Chinese, which means hope. The final character 寫 (xie) references the style of painting. The red stamp is the traditional way of signing a Chinese painting.
