The elder tree, short and gnarled, comes into bloom around May in Britain. Its pale flowers unfurl their delicious scent along hedgerows and in woods and fields and gardens, where it was traditionally planted to ward off the devil.

Ffern’s pink peppercorn oil is extracted from plants grown on the volcanic Réunion Island, 680km east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Our 100% pure oil is extracted with the CO2 extraction process.

Ffern mandarins are harvested in the months before ripening. Whilst still green, they are cold pressed on site to preserve their delicate top notes. The scent is notably sharper and more floral than their ripe counterparts.

Our Egyptian basil grand vert is renowned for its high linalool composition and its distinctive aniseed notes. The leaves are cut and immediately distilled - if they are allowed to dry, the scent is largely lost.

Ffern key lime is grown in the north of Peru. The fruits are harvested in the afternoon to avoid the oil loss caused by their early morning turgor. Next, they are passed through a pelatrice, and the gathered liquid is centrifuged to obtain a pure lime rind oil.

Buchu leaf oil is made by drying and steam distilling the leaves from the small, thorny buchu bush. Native to South Africa, buchu grows wild near streams in the fynbos, a belt of coastal shrubland in the Eastern and Western Cape.

Our red cedar wood (also known as red juniper) is grown and harvested in its native Virginia, USA. The oil is steam distilled directly from a cabinet maker’s offcuts. It shares the classic woody notes of atlas cedar, but introduces a distinctive ‘pencil’ facet.

To make neroli, blossoms from the bitter orange tree are soaked in water before being steam distilled - the water left behind is orange flower water. Our bitter oranges are cultivated in the South of France.

All our fragrances are made with an organic grain alcohol base. A blend of common and spelt organic wheats are quintuple distilled at our north Italian distillery in Cuneo, beneath Monte Viso, to yield a 198 proof perfumers' alcohol.

Hand-picked at night to preserve intensity, our jasmine sambac is native to the Eastern Himalayas. Also known as Arabian jasmine, jasmine sambac has a long history of connection with Persia and the Middle East. The oil is extracted at source using Joseph Robert’ solvent extraction process.

Our neroli oil is extracted from the blossom of bitter Seville Orange trees on Cape Bon in northern Tunisia. The blossoms are hand-picked in the spring at daybreak, once dew has formed. The flowers are immediately pressed and distilled.

We chose Haitian vetiver over Javan competitors for its fresh, sparkling notes, and because the root provides sustainable employment for south Haitian communities. One year after planting, the roots are excavated, washed, cut, and sun-dried before they can be steam distilled at source.

Orange flower is made from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, but unlike neroli, it is extracted using the solvent method, avoiding heat. This allows the blossoms to keep their rich, deep scent; where neroli has delicate, light, green facets, orange flower absolute is seductive, intense.

Ffern petitgrain is harvested in Paraguay from a hybrid tree - a cross between a sweet Citrus x sinensis and a bitter Citrus x aurantium. Grown by a network of family farmers, the tree’s leaves and branches are cut and immediately distilled in hand built, clay sealed wooden distilleries.

Closely related to cardamom and turmeric, ginger root is crowned by clusters of jewel-coloured flowers and green leaves. At Ffern, we source our ginger root in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, where it is extracted using the CO2 process.

Grown on Calabrian hills overlooking the Ionian Sea, the fruit is harvested by hand and the oil extracted at source. The La Face family planted their first bergamot in the 1930s and have been mastering the craft of producing citrus oils ever since.

Our bitter oranges are grown in a third-generation family orchard in Bauru, Brazil, where they are hand-picked in the early summer of the Southern Hemisphere. The rind is cold pressed on site to produce a juicy, uplifting oil.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint, a familiar sparkly note with a slight peppery edge. We partner with farmers in India's northerly Mint Regions to grow and steam distill our high grade peppermint oil.
