Our Spring 26 Perfumer’s Candle, created to complement the blossom filled notes of the season’s Eau de Parfum, evokes a winding stream where wild mint and thyme sprawl, crowding the banks. Warming aniseed adds complexity to this freshness, while peppery caraway conjures the mineral scent of dew-soaked earth.

Broom shrubs bloom in late spring, revealing butter-yellow petals. They are hand-harvested at the height of their bloom, when their scent is most intense, then transformed into an absolute through solvent extraction. Broom has hallucinogenic properties that feed many legends, including the story of Blodeuwedd (meaning ‘Flower Face’) in Welsh mythology, who was created from the flowers of broom, oak and meadowsweet. In Italy, the shrub was burned to ward off witches, and in Sussex, a traditional rhyme cautions: ‘Sweep the house with blossomed broom in May/sweep the head of the household away.’

Tuberose is an intensely-scented flower, only blooming at night when its colours are invisible to pollinators. Over the centuries, extraction of tuberose absolute has evolved significantly. At Ffern, we use solvent extraction to yield a much higher concentration of fragrance. 


Nicknamed the Ivory Flower for its creamy-white petals and decadent connotations, tuberose is one of the most captivating ingredients in fine perfumery. Its blossoms are so powerful that just a few stems can perfume a room for days, or even weeks. This intensity stems from its nocturnal nature. Tuberose blooms at night, when the flower’s colours are invisible to insects - so it must seduce pollinators through scent alone.

The extraction of tuberose absolute has evolved significantly over the centuries. Historically, perfumers employed the cold enfleurage technique - a process that preserves the flower’s scent well, but is time consuming and labour intensive. At Ffern, we employ a solvent extraction method, yielding a much higher concentration of fragrance. The result is an absolute whose scent is green, floral, creamy and honeyed, with facets of beeswax and gingerbread.

Valerian is a flowering herb whose essential oil is extracted from the plant’s root. On its own, its scent is powerful and is therefore rarely used in perfumery. Our nose, Elodie, uses the oil with careful restraint, for the distinctive herbaceous and earthy depth it lends to a composition.

Valerian, known in medieval times as ‘All Heal’, is a flowering herb long cultivated for its medicinal properties. First recorded by Hippocrates, who prescribed it to cure ailments like insomnia and anxiety, its name derived from the Latin valere, ‘to be in good health’. 

Our valerian essential oil is extracted from the plant’s root, which is carefully dried, crushed and steam distilled. On its own, its scent is powerful and assertive, and is therefore rarely used in perfumery. Our nose, Elodie, uses the oil with careful restraint - it brings a distinctive herbaceous, earthy and woody depth to a composition, making the wearer feel grounded and connected to nature.

Native to the Philippines, Elemi cannot be harvested until its tree is seven years old. During the wet season, an incision is made in the tree bark and the resin is collected using palm fronds. From this, the essential oil is extracted using steam distillation.

Our chamomile comes from the rich soils of Egypt’s Nile Valley, where wild or blue chamomile has been grown for centuries. Though the flower is white and gold, once it has undergone steam distillation the resulting oil is blue. Its warm and herbaceous scent is earthy with apple-like undertones.

This unusual colour comes from chamazulene, an aromatic compound released during steam distillation. Its scent is warm and herbaceous, reminiscent of hay, with apple-like notes and earthy undertones. Hence the name of the plant, chamomile, reflects this observation by the Ancient Greeks: χαμαί ("on the ground") and μήλον ("apple").

Closely related to cardamom and turmeric, ginger root is crowned by clusters of jewel-coloured flowers and green leaves. At Ffern, we source our ginger root in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, where it is extracted using the CO2 process.

Our neroli oil is extracted from the blossom of bitter Seville Orange trees on Cape Bon in northern Tunisia. The blossoms are hand-picked in the spring at daybreak, once dew has formed. The flowers are immediately pressed and distilled.

Orange flower is made from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, but unlike neroli, it is extracted using the solvent method, avoiding heat. This allows the blossoms to keep their rich, deep scent; where neroli has delicate, light, green facets, orange flower absolute is seductive, intense.

Like neroli, it is made from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, but it differs from neroli in that it is extracted using the solvent method, which does not use heat. This lack of heat allows the blossoms to keep their rich, deep scent; where neroli has light, green facets that are more delicate, orange flower absolute is seductive, intense. Orange blossoms are traditionally associated with weddings - Queen Victoria famously wore a headdress of them on her wedding day.

Timut pepper is a berry, plucked from the steep mountains of the Mahabharats in southern Nepal. It is made up of a hard, bitter black seed encased in a pericarp casing like the zest of a tangerine. Ffern timut pepper is extracted using the CO2 process. 


Like pink and Szechuan peppers, timut pepper is not really a pepper at all - but a berry, plucked from the steep mountain sides of the Mahabharats in southern Nepal. It is made up of a hard, bitter black seed (this is removed before being used for cooking) encased in a pericarp, a casing a bit like the zest of a tangerine. These little berries have made an exciting entrance into the perfume world only recently. Their complex citrus sparkle is, for many people, akin to grapefruit or dried peel, bringing a light, fresh spice to the opening of a fragrance. Ffern timut pepper is harvested in Nepal and extracted using the supercritical CO2 process.

Originally developed in eighteenth-century Holland, Ffern’s Rose de Mai is grown in Morocco. Traditionally picked only in the month of May, our rose petals undergo solvent extraction immediately, to produce a dark, fragrant wax that can be processed into an absolute or oil. 


Rose de Mai is one of perfume’s most storied ingredients. Originally developed by rose breeders in eighteenth-century Holland, _Rosa x centifolia_ is now most closely associated with Provence where it is grown for Chanel No. 5 - but it is in Morocco that it’s grown in its greatest numbers. Its Latin name _centifolia_ means ‘hundred leaved’, and this abundance also gives it the rather less exalted name of cabbage rose. The scent of Rose de Mai is remarkably rich and honeyed, the very essence of an imagined rose. Traditionally picked only in the month of May, our rose petals undergo solvent extraction immediately, to produce a dark, fragrant wax that can be further processed into an absolute or oil. The colour is removed using activated charcoal.

Spring 26 was created in partnership with Knepp Wilding - capturing the heady tangle of green and white that crowns the rewilded land in spring. Petitgrain and timut pepper evoke the luminous dawn, while broom and tuberose call up clouds of blossom. For the wild meadows we paired valerian and elemi.
