Our black spruce needle comes from the trees grown across the boreal forests of Quebec, where the species is hardy enough to withstand brutal, ice-cold winters. The needles and young branches are steam distilled to produce an essential oil, which is camphorous and woody, with a cool, spiced character.
Like other pine varieties, it has a fresh, woody and resinous character, but this species is distinguished by its distinctly balsamic quality, lending unexpected depth and warmth to a fragrance.
