Lizzie Riches is a portrait artist who grew up near the ancient oaks of Epping Forest, which gave her an enduring love for the natural world. Her other passion, for Elizabethan portraiture, began aged five when she visited Audley End House in East Anglia. 

Lizzie’s painting for Spring 25 is simply called ‘Violet’ - an enigmatic figure clothed in flowers, gazing out from amid springtime trees. The bird is a Jenny Wren and the butterfly a Meadow Brown.

An early spring woodland, veiled in tender green. Velvet cushions of moss gleam on silvered branches. In the glade, dimpled with lemon-pale sunlight, an iridescent purple. A panoply of violets, the year’s first perfume.

This imagined forest, redolent of childhood stories, feels to us like the beginning of a fairytale. For Spring 25, we wanted to lean into this nostalgic setting - creating a fragrance that would beget your own springtime enchantment. 

At the heart of the fragrance, we knew we had to have the colour and scent of violets. Accordingly, we turned first to violet leaf absolute\*, a deep green liquid which could itself be a magical potion. Its cut-grass facets and warm, woodland undertones paired beautifully with the honeyed tones of another harbinger of spring - the precious jonquil absolute, whose common name is rush daffodil.

Yet we were missing the purple flourish of the violet - its sweet, captivating sparkle. After many iterations we found this in an accord of Rose de Mai, lavender and, for the first time, ylang ylang. These notes blended together to bring a sweet, creamy and faintly herbal florality. An addition of Sicilian lemon rind brought the zest. 

But in fairytales, things are rarely as they appear. The woods are green and sunlit - but they are also deep and dark. For this layer of mystery, we lit upon orris, made from the powdered roots of the bearded iris. Rich and opulent, the orris shaded our violet to indigo. As ever, we can’t wait to hear what you think.

\*An absolute is the most aromatic form of natural oils, obtained from petals or plants by solvent extraction.


We grow our violets in the nutrient-rich soils of the Nile Valley, Egypt, where the harvesting process is steeped in tradition, and tied to the region’s unique agricultural practices. 
From December to May, skilled local harvesters gather the leaves by hand, starting at dawn to protect their delicate fragrance from the harsh midday sun. The freshly harvested leaves are then transformed through Joseph Robert's renowned solvent extraction method, yielding a rich, dark green liquid known as violet leaf absolute—a concentrated essence of their verdant aroma.

The La Faces are a third-generation citrus farming family, and the go-to source for citrus expertise at Ffern. They grow lemons on the northeastern tip of Sicily - just across the 3km straight of Messina and in sight of our Bergamot on the Calabrian shores. The fruit is picked by hand, and the rinds cold pressed on site.

Our jonquil daffodil, also known as rush daffodil, is grown in the hills around Grasse, the historic perfume capital of France. The flowers typically bloom in late winter to early spring,  producing clusters of small, intensely fragrant yellow flowers.
Unlike many other spring flowers that decrease in quality after the first season’s bloom, jonquil daffodils retain their exceptional bloom year after year, thanks to their natural bulb division. We work with skilled local harvesters, who uphold traditional, sustainable practices. Only the blossoms are gently gathered, leaving the plants undisturbed to encourage future growth.

Peppermint is a cross between watermint and spearmint, a familiar sparkly note with, as you’d expect, a slight peppery edge. This ingredient brings a distinctive ‘cold’ facet to fragrances, similar to eucalyptus. We partner with farmers in India's northerly 'Mint Regions' to grow and steam distill our high grade peppermint oil.

Eucalyptus is a genus of over seven hundred species in the Myrtle family, _Myrtaceae_. Though native to Australia, it is grown in many other countries. We harvest our blue gum eucalyptus on the Yunnan Plateau, China; the essential oil is created through steam distillation of the leaves. Eucalyptus has a distinctive 'cold' quality, similar to peppermint.

Our red cedar wood (also known as red juniper) is grown and harvested in its native Virginia, USA, and principally used for cabinet making. The oil is steam distilled directly from a cabinet maker’s offcuts. It shares the classic woody notes of atlas cedar, but introduces a distinctive ‘pencil’ facet.

Orris is one of perfume’s rarest and most valuable ingredients. Made from the dried, powdered and distilled roots of bearded iris, it is velvety, suede-like, with a hint of violet, something of milk and earth. It's deeply rooted in the soil in which it’s grown and intimately connected to the people who tend it. After three to four years of flowering, the roots are dug up by hand - scentless, they must now be matured for another several years. Once mature, the roots are powdered, mixed with water and distilled by steam to produce a semi-solid oil, sometimes known (delightfully) as orris butter. This oil has been used in fragrance for thousands of years, making appearances in iconic scents such as Chanel No. 5.

Grown on Calabrian hills overlooking the Ionian Sea, the fruit is harvested by hand and the oil extracted at source. The La Face family planted their first bergamot in the 1930’s and have been mastering the craft of producing citrus oils ever since. They are always our first port of call when it comes to sourcing bergamot and other citruses for our fragrances.

Our _Lavandula angustifolia_ is grown by a network of family farms in the hills of Provence at 600-1500m above sea level. It is distilled locally using Joseph Robert’s pioneering solvent extraction method. This much-loved herb is particularly beloved of Provençals, who have been growing it for centuries, and it is often called the soul of the region.

Hand-picked at night to preserve intensity, our jasmine sambac is native to a small region in the Eastern Himalayas. Also known as Arabian jasmine, jasmine sambac has a long history of connection with Persia and the Middle East - the name jasmine is derived from Persian _yasmin_, which means ‘gift from God’. The oil is extracted at source using Joseph Robert’s solvent extraction process.

Rose de Mai is one of perfume’s most storied ingredients. Originally developed by rose breeders in eighteenth-century Holland, _Rosa x centifolia_ is now most closely associated with Provence where it is grown for Chanel No. 5 - but it is in Morocco that it’s grown in its greatest numbers. Its Latin name _centifolia_ means ‘hundred leaved’, and this abundance also gives it the rather less exalted name of cabbage rose. The scent of Rose de Mai is remarkably rich and honeyed, the very essence of an imagined rose. Traditionally picked only in the month of May, our rose petals undergo solvent extraction immediately, to produce a dark, fragrant wax that can be further processed into an absolute or oil. The colour is removed using activated charcoal.

We’re incredibly fond of this ingredient. We chose Haitian vetiver over its Javan competitor for its fresher, sparkling notes which work well with our bergamot, and because the root provides such a valuable and sustainable source of employment for the south Haitian community. One year after planting, the roots are excavated, washed, cut, and sun-dried before they can be steam distilled at source.

We harvest our ylang ylang, the 'flower of flowers', on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar, once nicknamed the ‘scented island’. Its warm and humid climate allows the flower to thrive, and you will smell the flower long before you see the tree. 

The distillation of our ylang ylang oil is a time-sensitive and complex process. The aromatic blooms, with their signature drooping yellow petals, are typically harvested early in the morning when the flowers are at their most fragrant. Local harvesters work with great care to avoid damaging the delicate petals, which could compromise the quality of the oil extracted. After picking, the flowers are immediately taken to small, family-owned distilleries, where the steam distillation process begins within hours to preserve the scent’s freshness.

Ffern's natural Spring 25 fragrance captures the scent of an early spring woodland filled with violets.

Spring 25 tells of a sunny woodland glade in early spring, tender green and scented with sweet violets. Jonquil daffodil and ylang ylang bring a soft, honeyed florality, while velvety orris shades our violet to indigo - the heart of the woodland, and the fresh spring earth.
